Illustration course information
Discover the art of traditional illustration in this hands-on course that explores a range of styles and techniques. From technical and editorial illustration to commercial applications like greeting cards and packaging, you’ll develop core skills in line, tone, colour, texture, shape, and pattern. Dive into the world of botanical illustration using traditional mediums such as ink, watercolour, and pencil. Through a series of creative mini-projects, you’ll experiment with different tools and approaches, building confidence and refining your illustrative style.
BAEC offers a range of illustration courses for beginners and improvers at the Kentwood centre with our new tutor, Ciara Flood. Most courses are mixed ability. Depending on your experience, you will have the opportunity to develop your art and individuality. Please contact hello@baec.ac.uk and ask to be put in touch with the curriculum leader, if you would like further information on a particular course content.
Equipment and materials
Materials for drawing and painting classes will normally be discussed during the first session of the course and we recommend that you do not purchase art equipment until you have agreed the list with the tutor. You are asked to bring any art materials you already have to the first session. Please note that quality art equipment can be a substantial investment; talk to your tutor as soon as possible if you have concerns about additional costs for your course.
We have a list of recommended art equipment that you might find helpful here.
Classroom based courses
The maximum number of learners in each group varies between 14 and 18, depending on the size of the room. We advise you to enrol early to secure your place.
There are enough tables, easels or boards for each student to have their own workstation and/or there is enough room at shared tables for students to work safely. We realise that equipment is used by multiple users at times; we maintain and upgrade facilities regularly and there are sanitising facilities in the classroom for your convenience. Other procedures e.g. rota to use the sinks, etc. will be agreed at the first session.
To assist us in keeping classrooms clean and clutter-free, please only bring what you need and arrive promptly, but not before the start of your session.
Only bottled water in a sealed container is allowed, please keep it in your bag when not in use.
